Chapter 10

As they drove away from Pritchard’s place, Robin pondered the label in Ratchet’s mouth. Had it come from Evie’s bottle of creme de menthe or a different one purchased by Moler? It was clear Evie had introduced the grasshopper cocktails to Moler, and he liked them—maybe too much.

Had Moler mixed more at his own home? If not, it made sense to find out if Evie still had the liqueur and if it still had its sticker. They had to investigate Evie’s role in the mystery. Not only had she brought the green liquid, but from what Pritchard said, she had an obvious motive to harm Slater—if it was true that Slater shot her puppy. She turned to Lee. “We need to question Evie right away.”

Lee glanced at his watch. “It’s already one o’clock. I’ve gotta go to Starry Hill to see if I can get a court order for Sassy’s records from Pam Peckinpah. We’ve got to interview the spouse—a bad marriage is often behind these types of murders. From what I’ve heard, she’s a large woman, too, and known to have physical fights with Slater. We have to track her down first, and that lawyer probably knows where she’s living.” His brow furrowed, and a sly chuckle escaped his lips. “I have to go back to her office, and I’m taking you along. No way am I facing that she-devil again.”

Robin winced, not wanting to suffer meeting Pam Peckinpah. From what Lee had described, she was horrible. Yet she wanted to be helpful. “You want me to protect you?”

“Sure do. Besides, Evie works in town. She won’t be home ‘till later.”

“Okay, we’ll try to catch Evie another time, but she’s at the top of my suspect list.”

“Why do you say that?” Lee asked.

“Because the dog had the tag in his mouth and she’s the one who first introduced the mint liqueur to the neighbors. Plus, Slater killed her dog—an obvious motive for revenge.”

Lee’s pinched expression told her he disagreed. “But Robbie, we have more than one witness who says Moler took a real liking to the aperitif. He might have bought some. It might be his label. He has a stronger motive and is more physically able than Evie. Plus, he threatened to kill Slater.”

Robin crossed her arms, irritated that the solution was so hard to find.

“Besides Moler,” Lee continued. “Don’t forget Sassy. She bitterly fought with Slater. Their troubles were so intense that she filed for divorce. She may have killed him.”

“You could be right.” Robin didn’t mind conceding this. However, there were other things to consider. “But Pritchard’s remarks got me thinking about Evie. She may not be strong enough, but what about her spouse? They could have worked as a team.”

“Possible.” He held up both hands briefly. “Don’t know. Haven’t met him.”

“Her husband is another person to question.”

Lee nodded. “What do you know about him?”

“Only that his name is Tuffy.” She ran her hand across her chin. “From what I understand, he’s ill. Makes me wonder .
